Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are materials used to fill cavities in teeth that have been damaged by decay or trauma. The goal of a filling is to restore the tooth’s function and shape, prevent further decay, and protect the tooth from additional damage. There are several types of dental fillings, including:

  • Amalgam fillings: These are made from a combination of metals, including silver, mercury, tin, and copper. Amalgam fillings are durable and can withstand chewing forces, making them suitable for use in the back teeth.
  • Composite fillings: These are made from a mixture of plastic and glass materials that can be colored to match the natural tooth. Composite fillings are often used for front teeth or visible parts of teeth due to their aesthetic appeal.
  • Gold fillings: These are made from gold alloy and are highly durable. Gold fillings are more expensive than other types of fillings and require multiple visits to the dentist to place.
  • Ceramic fillings: These are made from porcelain and are tooth-colored, making them a popular choice for fillings in visible areas of the mouth. Ceramic fillings are highly durable and resistant to staining.
  • Glass ionomer fillings: These are made from a combination of acrylic and glass materials and release fluoride, which can help prevent further decay. Glass ionomer fillings are often used for fillings below the gum line or in baby teeth.

The type of filling used depends on the location and extent of the decay, as well as the patient’s preference. Our expert dentist Dr. Priyanka Khanna will recommend the most appropriate type of filling for your specific situation.
